Notes
for JACOB LOCH/LOUGH:
Partial Transcription of Jacob Loch's Will:
The
17th day of November 1753, Jacob Loch made his last will on his bed
being very sick but God be thanked of sound understanding. First he
gives to his son Nicholas Loch his plantation, one horse, one cow, one
plow, one harrow, one grubbing hoe, wedge, maul, hour hoes, all my horse
geers, one augar, and a broad ax for the consideration of eighty pounds,
I say 80 pounds good lawful money of Pennsylvania, and the said Nich
Loch shall give to his Father and Mother yearly fifteen bushels of wheat
and to winter two cows yearly as he doth his own and he is to sow yearly
for them one quarter of an acre with flaxseed, and they are to have a
piece of the upper part of my garden along the path and they are to
dwell in my house during their lives and he is to cut and hall firewood
for them as much as they want and to carry corn to the mill and fetch it
back again for them. For their money whatever they have occasion for and
if one of them shall happen to dye then he is to give no more than seven
bushel and one-half of wheat yearly so long till the survivor dyes too
than there is an end with finding corn, wintering the cows, sowing of
flaxseed and the dwelling in the house for Nicholas Loch in heir to
that.
Jacob
Loch gives to his son John Nicholas Loch two folts for eleven pounds,
one neat for two pounds, two calves for one pound, eleven head of cattle
for seven pound ten shillings, twelve...

Revolutionary War / Pennsylvania
Jacob
Lough entered the army of the Revolution as a teamster, being too young
to do camp and field duty. He had been in the army but a short time when
he told his comrades he could play the fife. They laughed at him and
ridiculed him, knowing he had never had one in his hands. He said, "I
have watched how the fifer moves his fingers, his mouth and how he holds
his fife; get that fifer to lend me his fife and I'll show you I can
play." The fifer was called and on being informed of the conversation,
believing it a camp joke, handed his fife to Jacob, who, without a
blunder, played to the astonishment of all, several tunes, which he had
learned in the camp, better than the fifer. He was taken from his team
and made Fife Major. Nearly the whole Lough family, which is numerous,
possesses a musical talent.

Notes
for WALTER ALLISON STEWART:
OBITUARY: WELL KNOWN CITIZEN DIES AT HOME
Sadness entered many homes Friday morning when it was learned that
Walter A. Stewart, one of the best known men in this community, had
passed away at his home half a mile north of Darlington.
Altho
Mr. Stewart had suffered attacks of illness several times in the past
few years, he had seemed much better lately and had been leading the
singing at revival meetings in nearby towns.
Last
week he was singing at the Congregational Christian church in Linden. On
Thursday night, Mrs. Stewart, their grand-daughter, Alison Holmes, and
some friends accompanied him to Linden where an old fashioned service
was held. He returned home as well as usual but became ill about 3:30 am
Friday and passed away at 9:30.
For
more than forty years Mr. Stewart was a rural mail carrier here,
retiring only a few years ago.
His
work as a singing Evangelist took him to many towns in Indiana as well
as into neighboring states. He loved music and never was happier than
when leading a congregation in hymns or in doing solo work. For many
years he had attended the Quarterly meetings of Friends at Gravelly Run,
Sugar Plain, and Farmers Institute where he always led the singing.
Mr.
Stewart was a member of the Congregational Christian Church, to which he
gave devoted service. He was vice president of the Armory Club and was
serving as president at the time of his death.
The
son of James Harvey and Sarah Elliott Stewart, he was born on Sept. 14,
1886, at the old Stewart homestead south east of Darlington. He was
married to Corda Lough, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Lough.
Survivors, in addition to the widow, include five sons, Byron L. Stewart
of Anderson; Buren C. Stewart, editor of the Darlington Herald; R. Beryl
Stewart and William L. Stewart, all of Darlington; and Buford Stewart,
of Eaton, and two daughters, Mrs. C.E. Rowland, of Joplin, MO., and Mrs.
C.W. Holmes, of Darlington.
Four
brothers and one sister also survive, Herman Stewart, of Darlington;
James Stewart, of Ladoga; Mark Stewart, of Thorntown; Edgar Stewart, of
Crawfordsville; and Mrs. O.C. Edwards, of Mace.
There
are also 13 grandchildren surviving in addition to an aunt, Mrs. Emma
Mount, of Crawfordsville, sister of his father.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the
Congregational Christian church, where the many floral tributes which
banked the altar were silent reminders of the esteem with which Mr.
Stewart was regarded. The body had lain in state at the Smith Funeral
Home.
Before the arrival of the family at the church, Mrs. Glen Carson,
organist, played a group of hymns including "Close to Thee," "Now I'm
Coming Home," "Have Thine Own Way," "Take Time to be Holy," "A Touch of
His Hand," and "Still, Still With Thee."
At
the opening of the service, Mrs. Herbert Royer, with Mrs. Carson,
accompanist, sang "Beyond the Sunset." Willard Anderson, close friend of
Mr. Stewart, offered prayer and Mrs. Royer sang "Face to Face."
Rev.
David Nelson, pastor of the church, gave the address which he prefaced
by reading the 90th Psalm, the 23rd Psalm, and the 14th chapter of John.
For the closing of the service, Rev. Nelson read "Crossing the Bar" and
Mrs. Royer sang "Only Remembered."
Interment was in the Stewart family plot in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
Attending the funeral and burial were many relatives and friends from
out of town.
